Don’t be scared to try this homemade tortilla recipe, it’s not as hard as it seems!

Ingredients
  • 2 cups flour
  • ½ cup lukewarm water
  • ¼ cup shortening or ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Instructions
  1. Put the flour, baking powder and salt into a mixing bowl.
  2. Mix the shortening (or vegetable oil) into the flour mixture until it forms balls the size of a pea.
  3. Add the lukewarm water, a little at a time, until the dough is pliable and soft.
  4. On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 1-2 minutes, until smooth.
  5. Place in a bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it "rest" for about 30 minutes.
  6. Knead the dough and form 8 balls, rolling them out as thin and round as possible.
  7. Preheat an ungreased cast-iron frying pan or griddle.
  8. Cook the tortillas one at a time, for less than a minute, flipping when a bubble forms.
  9. Put the cooked tortillas in a plastic bag to keep them soft and warm until ready to serve.
